Paul Strand climbed the steps of Federal Hall one morning in 1915 and pressed the shutter at the exact moment New York was becoming itself. Long shadows stretch across the sidewalk. The windows of the new J.P. Morgan building yawn like dark doorways. The people — faceless, bundled against the early hour — move in a slow, deliberate current past one of the most powerful buildings on earth. It is a photograph about scale, about anonymity, about what it feels like to live inside a city that is growing larger than you. More than a century later, it still does. This is one of the most important photographs ever made in New York, and holding it — even as a print on the wall — is like keeping a small window open to the morning of the modern age.
