City Hall Subway Station, HAER
Ride the 6 train past its last stop on a good day and, as the car curves around to head back uptown, you can catch a glimpse of it through the window: the abandoned City Hall station, the crown jewel of the first New York City subway, closed to the public since 1945 and quietly glowing underground ever since. Rafael Guastavino built its tile arches. Heins and LaFarge, the architects who also gave us St. John the Divine, designed the space. On opening day in 1904, 150,000 New Yorkers passed through it. What remains is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture most New Yorkers will never see in person, and this HAER photograph brings it to the wall. Printed on archival paper to honor the tonal range of the original.
