There was a time when everything you needed in New York could be found in one place. The Yellow Pages sat by the phone, packed with ads for plumbers, locksmiths, restaurants, and escorts.
These weren’t tucked away. They filled entire pages, often with the boldest design in the book. Logos that looked like nightclub flyers. Fonts that felt lifted from neon signs. Artwork that hinted, but never said too much.
What makes it more striking is the contradiction. In a city where prostitution was illegal, escort services were advertised openly in a book delivered to every home and business.
It was a gray area New York never fully resolved. A place where what was criminalized on one corner could still be marketed on the next page.
